Oct2Written by:wrestlingblogger 10/2/2009 12:58 PM How many times have wrestling teams had to re-arrange their practice schedule in order to prepare for up-coming events? How many times have wrestling teams had to settle for the most inconvenient practice times because of “other activities”? Or how often do wrestling events have to pay premium facility fees to host events? Well, California-USA Wrestling will not have to after spring 2012.
California-USA Wrestling recently announced an impressive, yet aggressive, plan to build a free-standing 100,000 square foot sports complex in the city of Tulare. I believe that this is an unprecedented facility for such an organization. The state’s numbers, however, are unprecedented as well. California’s State Freestyle/ Greco-Roman/ Grappling Championships attract upwards of 1500 athletes. Can you imagine a tournament that size in your state? California also has about 17,000 athletes, 2200 coaches, 400 sanctioned clubs and 300 officials registered with USA Wrestling. The state hosts upwards 200 events between freestyle, Greco-roman, and folkstyle. California-USA Wrestling also has the advantage of some of the land being donated by a wrestling friendly construction company (who is also building the facility). The state association also envisions the addition of dormitories and kitchen facilities in the future.
Can you imagine if your state association implemented a plan of this magnitude? Do you believe it will enhance the development of the athlete? Do you believe that this will make the “Fargo experience” better?
I believe that there are few state associations that could make a dream plan, like this, come true. I would put California on the top of the list. I also believe that Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Minnesota have the leadership and state support to successfully accomplish this feat.
What do you think?
